Drainage is one of the least glamorous parts of a build and one of the most important. Water has to go somewhere, and the right system depends on your site, your ground and what you are connecting to.
Surface water, the rain that falls on roofs and hard surfaces, is often dealt with by a soakaway, which lets water disperse into the ground, or by an attenuation system, which holds water back and releases it slowly so it does not overwhelm the network downstream. Which one suits you depends on how well your ground drains, something a percolation test will tell you.
Foul water, the waste from kitchens and bathrooms, ideally connects to the mains sewer. Where that is not possible, a septic tank or treatment plant handles it on site, and these come with their own regulations to follow.
